On Thursday I got the opportunity to visit the basement where the Chinese men lived in in the early 1900s. I've heard about this mysterious basement and have been trying to figure out how to get down there (see my last blog entry for the entire story) and I fortunately got the chance to get down there. It very awe-striking! Who would have guessed there is this mini-hostel like space down in the basement of one of the buildings on 3rd Street. I definitely got goosebumps during the tour. It's really dark down there and a good amount of the artifacts are original items the Chinese left behind.
Getting a chance to talk to Matt was great too. He and his wife have been reconstructing the place in hope of getting it back to it's original condition. They have done a lot of research and have been working really hard. Currently, they are unable to open it up for tours, but hopefully they will be able to.
I tried to be artsy when I was taking the photos and decided not to use flash on a lot of them, and unfortunately they came out a tab bit blurry. But I think they do a good job capturing the eariness I felt down there.
